“Wondrous Love”
(Hymns
of Eternal Love)
Volume
7
“Hymns of Eternal Love” not only commemorates our Saviour’s power over death, with songs such as, “Christ The Lord Has Risen Today” and “He Lives,” but it extols God’s great plan of salvation for all mankind, with songs that tell of the birth of a lowly babe in a manger. “Christians Awake!” Salute The Happy Morn,” and “Lift Up, Lift Up Your Voices Now,” are those songs. The latter has the same tune as, “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day,” and is a lovely song with Easter words, yet reminding us of Christmas and the birth of Jesus who came to save the world from its sins.
That child born in a manger, “was born to
die, that man might live”1 and the many hymns describing His cruel,
despicable and humiliating death on a cross include ones with titles that
begin, “At,” “Near,” “In,” “Down By,” and “Beneath” the cross of Jesus.
Besides these, the finest hymns ever written, “When I Survey The
Wondrous Cross,” and “The Old Rugged Cross,” dwell upon the essence of our
Christian faith. The reality of
Jesus’ death is vivid, for it was “on an old
rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame,” that our Saviour
died, “to pardon and sanctify me.”2
The
humility and suffering of Jesus are remembered in hymns such as, “Ivory
Palaces,” and “Jesus Paid It All.”
Hymns
related to communion services include, “Break Thou The Bread Of Life,” and “My
God, And Is Thy Table Spread?” As Jesus broke bread and passed the cup at The
Last Supper, He taught His disciples to “do
this in remembrance of Me.”3
Thankfulness and praise to God, who allowed Himself to be vulnerable rather
than powerful, so we could know Him, are proclaimed in such beautiful hymns as,
“Grace, Greater Than Our Sin,” and “Blessed Redeemer.”
Certain
hymns such as, “Lamb Of God,” and “Love Found A Way,” acknowledge Christ’s
death as the Sacrifice for our sins, and His resurrection as a promise of new
life. One’s own commitment to a
new and abundant life 4 which Jesus
promised, is best expressed by, “How Deep The Father’s Love For Us,” and “Are
Ye Able? Said The Master.”
Lyrics
for the church piper to memorize with these “Hymns
of Eternal Love” will enable correct inflection and phrasing with an
instrument that can speak passionately and emotionally of God’s
wondrous love. The piper
is able to unite with God and the audience with an invisible silken cord of
spiritual communication, to make the moment very personal indeed.
