“Wedding Music”
Volume
6
The
purpose of this music book is to illuminate the presence of God’s Spirit in the
wedding ceremony, and in the reception afterwards, with music by the Highland
bagpipes. To facilitate this, and
to enable ’pipers to enjoy the wonderful experience of providing a unique
expression of God’s love in the sacred ceremony of marriage, suitable music is
presented in this book.
As
in all occasions when music is part of a sacred ceremony, Christian principles
by which the musician lives gives meaning to the hymns that he or she plays.
Consequently, this volume of
“Wedding Music for The Church Piper” also encourages ’pipers to
look upon their own lives and marriages, if they are married, so they may be
improved. Thus, their music may be
well represented, making it truly meaningful; consequently edifying to God.
The
wedding party may be piped ceremoniously into the sanctuary with such beautiful
hymns as, “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah,”
“Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us,” or “Trumpet Tune,” by Henry Purcell.
During the ceremony, and by the bride’s choice, guests may hear other
desirable hymns like,
“O Perfect Love,” “In Heavenly Love Abiding,” “God Will take Care Of You,” and
“When Love Is Found.”
Piping
the newly married couple from the church with Pipe Major John McPhedran’s “The
Highland Wedding March,” or Felix Mendelssohn’s “Recessional,” or even by a
medley of hymns selected from “Wedding Music for The Church Piper,” will be in
the finest tradition of the Highlands of Scotland; a wonderful tribute to any
Highland lassie on her wedding day!
For
the reception, the ’piper may draw upon his or her own repertoire and on this
hymnbook. Besides the many hymns
in this collection, there are also a number of ’pipe tunes composed for
weddings, such as “John Bain MacKenzie’s Sister’s Wedding, “Mari’s Wedding,”
“Murdo’s Wedding,” and “Rab’s Wedding March.”
At the bride’s discretion, the ’piper might play such hymns as, “A Christian
Home,” “I Am His, And He Is Mine,” or the enduring favorite, “Acushla Mine,”
which is “Londonderry Air.”
Above all, wedding music longs for true love and committed permanence of marriage. Whatever the Christian ’piper can do to invoke God’s blessings upon the marriage, and upon the lives of the couple, by well-played, appropriately chosen music at the wedding ceremony and reception, the task is made easier by selecting hymns from this invaluable book, “Wedding Music for the Church Piper.”
