Here is an exciting music book for all bagpipe players.  It contains a collection of fifty-four hymns with a seafaring theme, which portrays people as magnificent, tall-masted sailing ships, carried to their destinations by prevailing winds, across a vast ocean, the ocean of life.  Various sailing conditions are to be encountered, from calm seas to challenging winds, tumultuous waves and treacherous waters.

The words of hymns and accompanying Scriptures provide directions for skillful seamanship, and the plotting of a course leading to a rewarding destination, God’s Kingdom of Heaven.  Words enable a piper to shape and phrase his or her music to speak words of encouragement to others, and to help them lift their eyes towards the dependable Captain of their ship, Jesus Christ.  Music, with its strict pulsations and beautifully arranged melodies, sensitizes hearts to receive the message it conveys.

Every hymn has been arranged to facilitate fingering, rhythm, expression and tone.  Some may be unfamiliar and challenging, while others, with a little practice, will soon become and integral part of a piper’s repertoire.

Whether one chooses to play, “Seafaring Hymns” for his or her own personal satisfaction and devotion to God, or for a banquet or church worship service, he or she will find this source both imaginative and convenient.  These hymns are appropriate whenever spiritually centered music is needed, to offer praise to God the Creator, Benefactor, Saviour and Captain of our ship.
