“A Piper’s Garden”

Volume 3

There is an underlying theme in every hymn in “A Piper’s Garden.”  It is that “one is nearer God’s heart in a garden, than anywhere else on earth.”  Hence, several hymns speak of the nearness of God, namely, “Near To The Heart of God,” “Nearer, My God, To Thee,” and “Nearer, Still Nearer.”

Arrangements are explicit, and these hymns may be executed in a melodious and majestic manner.  They are a challenge to the professional piper, as well as to the novice.

Corresponding words accompany every hymn because they are inseparable from the music.  You will want to learn both.  Poets complement melodies with words of admiration for God’s creation -the flowers, tall trees, birds, mountains, rivers and meadows.  Every verse reminds us that God’s wonders give us sufficient reason to praise Him.

“A Piper’s Garden” provides pipers with an insight into the metaphorical relationship between the ever-changing beauty of a perennial garden, and the value of a spiritually guided abundant life.  Either one is a glorification of God.

To meet God in a garden is to walk and talk with a Friend, whose love has been nurtured in the heart, and guarded by the walls of spirituality.  Ultimately, "A Piper's Garden" is the sanctuary of his or her heart, in which "garden" the love of God is nourished, to be shared with others.
